Renowned in yachting circles worldwide, the Whisstock name is synonymous with quality and integrity. Between 1926 and 1990, over 700 vessels from dinghies to luxury yachts up to 100' LOA were built at Whisstock’s yard on the River Deben at Woodbridge in Suffolk, England.
George Whisstock started work at the yard in 1962, gaining hands-on practical experience in all aspects of yacht handling, repair, construction and design. George spearheaded the introduction of WEST™ system wood-epoxy construction to the yard in the 1970’s, making Whisstocks was the first boatyard in the UK to build WEST™ system boats professionally. In 1979, he introduced aluminium alloy construction to the yard. From 1980 to 1990 he was Design and Production Director. George brings over 30 years of boatbuilding and design knowledge to his design practice, which he started in 1983. Read more ....
Pictured above, are some of our designs in build and under sail, ranging from an 8' sailing pram dinghy (Design No. 035) in epoxy/ply through to a 67' high-end charter yacht (Design No. 044) built in aluminium alloy (plans also available for construction in steel).
The same high quality, integrity and attention to detail runs through all our designs, large and small. George uses his personal experience of classical carvel construction, modern wood-epoxy systems, steel and aluminium alloy, as well as a long history of designing and building one-off high-quality custom yachts, to produce practical designs for the non-professional builder, and to write the step-by-step building instructions.
Always innovative, many of our designs are directly downloadable immediately upon purchase. No waiting around for the mail; fast and economic; no paper plans to get torn and unreadable; simply print off what you need when you need it as often as you need. No special equipment is required beyond a computer (Mac or PC) and an A4/US Letter size printer. They are also available on CD and as traditional Paper Plans.
A recent development is the provision of full-size DXF files for our designs. These allow the builder to purchase a complete kit of pre-cut plywood parts locally, to build and finish the boat. As well as making the build much easier, this speeds up the process considerably, usually at a very modest cost. More info ...
The detailed and accurate plans together with true step-by-step building instructions carry builders, professional and non-professional alike, through the building process simply and easily. And for larger boats particularly, they allow a managed build to be carried out very successfully. Plans are fully dimensioned; no scaling or lofting is required. The plans and instructions are practical, clear and detailed, containing everything required to build and complete the vessel. Where CNC cutting files are included, or available, they can be sent directly to a CNC facility as required. Professional technical support throughout the build, is available by email, via the forum or by regular mail. More plan info …
