Design 074 Laminated Frames and Alternative Cockpit

Laminated frames are now available for this design as an alternative to the existing plywood frames. Scroll down to the bottom of the Plans List page to see them listed. Some are also available as study plans.

Changing to laminated frames changes more than one would imagine and we haven't yet completed all the drawings of changes to other items in the boat.

We have completed drawings for the Profile Structures, Plan Structures, and Coachroof Front and Beams. Still to come are plans for the building jig (although this can be extrapolated from the existing jig plans). The centrecase, though unchanged, will be supported slightly differently, because the frames occur in different places. The outboard well will need modifying slightly.

Along with the laminated frames, we have outlined a new alternative cockpit layout and you can see this on the Plan Structures and Frame -4000, Study Plans. We haven't completed the actual cockpit drawings to go with this yet, though again they can be inferred from the other new drawings and the existing cockpit drawings. The alternative cockpit will be able to be used, with minor changes, with either frame version.

Other changes are mostly rather minor. Cut-outs for interior furniture items for example will change because the frames are wider, but shallower – and in different places.

The new mast frame does not have a mast post, so we can have a much better double bunk forward. And in general, laminated frames make a more flexible interior layout possible.

We are intending to work up a complete new interior to go with the laminated frame structure and the alternative cockpit layout, but this may some time yet!

Thanks for the update.
The changes sound really interesting. I look forward to future changes.
